| Was out of town for 3 weeks;rained most days in Juneau and temps below late Spring/early Summer normal-mostly 40's' grasses lush and green, profusion of dandelions along the roadside have bloomed and now look ready to seed. Most family gardens lagging, garlic up and a few potatoes starting but no carrots. Wild blue berries, red huckleberries tiny hard and green despite so many early blossoms and more bees this year. Salmon berries also not past the hard green stage...concerns for this year people subsistence and bear foraging. 'Coldest wettest season' in 50 yrs living here. Many discouraged locals and mixed feelings from hordes of cruise visitors. Immature bald eagles beginning to congregate along the coast near streams(anticipating salmon return?)Many black bears along the road and crossing our neighborhood...several sows with last year cubs and one nearby with this year cubs. Deer shy, one doe seen with two very tiny fawns. Snow pack on the Chilkats looks like end of August rather than June...concerns for hydropower and sustained stream/river levels for salmon return. |

| Another dry week with ETo at 0.54". Highs ranging between 65-78, lows 47-54, with some clear mornings, some with marine layer lingering to noon.Ruth Lake Reservoir at 100% on June 5th. Mad River at 6 feet and 90 cubic feet per second/Eel River 9.5 feet and 870 cubic feet per second. Trinity River 49-55 degrees, Klamath 60 degrees, and ocean 49-54 degrees. On the drought map the Del Norte and Humboldt coastal zones are officially D0--Abnormally dry. This weekend, the ban on salmon fishing has been lifted for two days and many fishermen are expected to head out. There may be several more two-day openings in the coming months, depending how this one works out with its take. Artists in Humboldt county began their two-weekend Open Studio festival, where about 150 artists from Rio Dell to Trinidad allow people to come and see their studio and how they make their art. Oyster Festival next weekend in Arcata. Hillside fields showing noticeable yellowing, though fields near the river bottom remain green. Bear getting into garbage containers, which is much earlier than normal for my location. Himalaya berries blooming. |

General Awareness
|
|
Over the past week, our region has experienced a prolonged dry spell with no measurable rainfall. Sky conditions have remained predominantly, mostly sunny to partly sunny, offering clear visibility throughout the period. Concurrently, local observations noted gusty northerly winds reaching up to 30 miles per hour. In higher terrain and along coastal areas, these wind gusts are likely to be even stronger.
Since May 3—over 35 days ago—no precipitation has been recorded. This sustained absence of rain confirms that we are firmly in the dry, summer-type pattern. Looking ahead, meteorological forecasts suggest that this warm, dry regime will persist with no appreciable precipitation expected in the near term. While the clear skies and warm temperatures invite us to embrace the season, the ongoing moisture deficit remains a concern.
Be sure to enjoy the summer warmth responsibly and remain vigilant for any unexpected shifts in weather. I look forward to sharing another detailed report next week. Stay safe and have a great day!

| Well our NWS had another successful forecast for our area as significant rains arrived as predicted. With 1.56" of rain recorded at my station last Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, soil conditions returned to near normal. Local waterways came up somewhat and are currently returning to normal with waterways further west still on the high side due to heavier rains there. Presently the U.S. Drought Monitor has expanded our moderate drought area. Their data is collected on Tuesdays, so hopefully our rain event will show up as an improvement on next weeks drought map. Area lawns look about as good as ever. Trees and shrubberies are growing surprisingly fast. Maybe due to all the extra CO2 in the air? Luckily, soil evaporation has been somewhat reduced as hotter temperatures and strong sunlight have been tempered by smokey skies from the Canadian wildfires. I've seen a few deer tracks in my garden lately but so far no damage. And I did see a couple of very large birds soaring way up there, much higher than the usual vultures. I figured that they must be eagles but even with binoculars I could not see any telltale white markings. So, not sure what they were, possibly immature eagles but as ever nature has its mysteries. |

Too much in that short of a time and we had severe flooding in the area. However, our lake which has been below normal level for some time is now above normal (about 5ft last I heard). Creek is full with good flow. Grass is growing faster and vegetation in general is looking very healthy. Soil is more than damp but not saturated. Birds/wildlife/insects are active. This week has been exceptionally dry, with heat indices soaring up to 106 degrees during the midweek. Consequently, lawn growth has slowed down. However, the weed suppression herbicides in the lawn are proving effective. The last of the wild mulberries has been devoured by cowbirds and crows. The flower beds are particularly dry, especially where the petunias have been removed. To ensure adequate water supply for the summer, new summer flowers will be equipped with drip irrigation. Construction on the road in front of my house continues but with lots of dust. |

Field plants are growing well now and gardens are healthy The local cherry crop is good this year.
